BIKINI ATOLL 350.0 MILES FROM HEKE
Bikini, which is abojit 3500 miles north of Wellington, has been inhabited for centuries by a small group of natives, who knew nothing mueh of the outside world until the adjaeent islands passed under the control of the Spanish. The latter were suce.eeded by the Germans. Finally, the Marshalls were taken over by the Japanese — part of the price that the Allies had to pay for the services of Japan in the First World War. The islpnds north of the line, following the Japanese oecupation, tlien became a sealed book. If w.as known that tlie new owners, despite the fact that they held them only by mandate from the League of Nations, were carrying out impoftant fortifications. Bikini, Jioweyer, was not among the islands ,on which- for tifi.cations were set up.
