CHRISTCHURCH, July 1. Supporters o"f Spanish Main, favourite and runner-up fpr the Dromole Hack Steepiechase at Ashburton, were lucky to re.ceive a divir dend. Actually Spanish Main was ineligible to compete, and his disqualification is likely to be announced by 'the committee of the Ashburton County Racing Club at a meeting to-morrow afternoon. The rules of racing provide' that every horse, other than a hack, which starts in any race as a hack, shall be disqualified for that- race. Spanish Main will automatically be disqualified, as he had won three steeplechases of a total value of £595 for the Invercargill ownertrainer, Mr. W. E. . Hazlett. The hack limit, uniess a horse is competing in hack engagements, is £500. - Provision is also made in the rules for disqualification of the person responsible for entering an open class horse in a hack race, providing it is knowingly d.one. It is understood that Mr. Hazlett, wlio races a big team, was under the impression that Spanish Main was still eligible for hack steeplechases.
