The discovery of new aspects of the splitting of the atomic nucleus l).y nieans of cosmic vays, for which Professor Alexander Zhdanov was awarded the Stalin prize of 100.000 roubles, is outstandingly signiticant savs a leading Russ>an scientist, Professor Konslantin Zhigaeh, writing in Jzvestia. "Previouslv the nuclei •ofatoms were split by various methods into larger fragments representing nuclei of other elements," he said. "Professor Zhdanov has established tliat some cosmic particles can cause almost coniplete tission of the nucleus into elementary particles whereof the nucleus was composed."
