AUCKLAND, June 28. Believed to huve lcaped from tlie Rotorua express as it approached I'urcAva tunnel shortly before 4 o'elock tliis aftcrnoon, a half-easte who was on his way to Auckland prison under cscort, made a successful getaway and was still at large at a late hour touight. A police partv searched along the railway line in the vicinity of Piuewaj shortlv after the traiu reached Auckland but there was no sign of thc j iluori. An exlensive search by police | cars was begun and eontinued duringj the night. ! Tli prisonor, Harry Martin, aged 22,. had pleaded guilty at Rotorua to al charge of breaking and entering and! Avas coinmitted to the Suprcme Court . at Auckland for seutence. In coinpany with anothor prisoner he was takou on , to tlie Kotorua express and escorted by! a constable. He was to have been ; placoil in Auckland ]>rison to. await his appeariince in the Supreme Court. It is considercd Martin had a lucky escape from death as it is believed the train was travelling fast when he madej his juinp. |
