LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

"INTERESTED."

Sir,— Erstwhile Shannon residents recenriy returnmg on hoiii day have one and 'all remarked on , j the smartened appearanee of the j j town area due to the painting of ! i Government-owned buildings,' re- ; i pairs, remodelling and painting ; j of existing buildings, and the j i new building erected where before two long concrete walls stood | ias a reminder of a fire long ago. j But not a word is said in praise of j i the appearanee of the streets, only ; . words of condemnation at the J untidy appearanee of same due to i overgrown footpaths and long rank j i grass - growing on the sides. The , , latter, I am sure. could easily be j cut. Any person able to would i gladly man the horse mower ana ao j ! his street gratis for the joy of see- j i ing it tidy. It is dishear temrig to j residents, who with very few excep- j tions take a pride in their well-kept i t vegetable and flower gardens with | ; trim lawns, to have them hidden • from view by the rank grass in the ■ i street and along the fence line, so ; , that visitors do no see just how well I i kept the house gardens and laivns| ; are, but go away with the impres- j ' sion that they are untidy, Uke the ! streets. Where is our civic pride? : Is it non-existent in Shannon? An expression I have often heard used by young people coming honie ! ; on holiday, as they walk along tne j streets, is "What a dump, why don't j you clean the streets up and get i some new fences?" Well, who isj responsible for this state of affairs? Surely the rut that oue person at a public meeting said Shannon folk were in is not too deep to be got out of. Yours etc..

Shannon, June 27.
