Received Friday, 11.20 a.m. LONDON, June >27. Cabinet, after a t avo koura' lnooling, docided that 'bread niu! flour i-a1 loiiii]"' would be introdtieed. The rationing is to begin on 'July 21, when the new ration books come into operation. The announcement was made siraultaneously in the House of Commons and the House of Lords to-day. The Minister of Food, Mr. Strachey, said in the House of Commons that the decision was taken because failure to ration bread now would mean an unjustifiable risk with a basic foodstuff. He announeed that Ihe meat ration would be increased 2d worth a week, bringing it to 14d weekly from July 21. Mr. Strachey said that the daily ration of bread would be nine ounces. This covered bread, flour and flour confectionery. Male manual workers would be entitled to nfteen ounces and expectant mothers and women manual workers to
(devon ounces. Children aged from 11 to 18 years would get twelve ounces, those aged from one to four would receive four ounces and those under one yeai' two ounces. Mr. Strachey said that the men and women manual workers who would get the higher scale numbered 12,000,000. These figures referred "to the position if the whole ration was taken up by bread, but a houseuufe was free to take any part °r all oi her ration in flour or floui' confectionery instead of bread. She could shop where she pleased. The ration would be measured in bread units. A twelveounce loaf would cost four flour bread units, a pound of flour three units and a pound of confectionery two units." Mr. Strachey said he had not undorostimated the gravity of ihe step the Government was compelled to take. but the Government would not be worthy to hold office if it flinched from the task and so risked a breakdown in the people's bread supply. fy > ^ ^ ^ . _
