Personal Mrs. J. A. ' Easton ana her son, Mr Spencer Easton, who, has not enjoyed the best of health since returning from overseas, returned home from a month's holiday at Waitarere Beach on Tuesday. Mr. McSweeney, who since his return from overseas some months ago resumed his teaching at the Shannon School, leaves at the end of June to take the position oi headmasteE of the Maharahara School, near Dannevirke. Improvements In reply to repeated requests to have the railway platform extended for the bencJtit oi the travelling public, the stationmaster (Mr. Creagh) advises that an effort was now being 'made to build up the section. In Sound Position At the annual meeting of the Shannon Bowling and Croquet Club, held recently, the report showed a successful season in the oowling section,'. while the balancesheet showed the club to be in a jound position. The sum of £96 17s 6d was received in subscriptions and competitions, and donations and tournaments brought in a furDher £21 3s lOd. Some £260 was ipent on upkeep and general improvements to grounds and ouildings. Early last season an overdraft of £250 was acquired, and (.hat has now been redueed to £205 6s 4d. Borough Items of Interest The town clerk (Mr. J. T. Bovis) advised councillors at the fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council on Tuesday evening that the credit balanee in the district fund account was £276 15s 6d, and since the rate demands had been sent two weeks ago, the sum of £265 8s lld had been paid to date. This amount represents 40 ratepayers. During the past year 38 saies of properties have been recorded in the valuation roll. The number of dogs registered in thc borough totalled 84, being 37 at 10s and 47 at 2s 6d. The number of motor drivers' licenses issued up tn Tuesday, June 25 was 113, and | heavy traffic f ees collected amount- | ed to £271 16s 6d. Croquet Green Improvements At the anr.uai meeting of tbc Shannon Bowling and Croquet Club, members of the croquet section asked that some attention should be given to the croquet green, as it was in a very bad state. It was explained that top-dressing of the green was on the programme for this season, but the wet weather ■ had caught. the greens committee ; unprepared and the top-dressing material had become wet, so that even the work commenced on the bowling green had not been eomIpleted. A working bee of members I was arranged, when it was hoped to i get the top-dressing soil . under | cover to dry out, so that something : may be done to the croquet green before opening day. At a small meeting of the croquet section, Mrs. S. Morrison agreed to act as secre- ! tary-captain for the ensuing year.
