WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

SHANNON'S JUNE MEETING A cheery fire made the meeting haii warm and comfortable for the 25 members present at th§ June meeting -of the Shannon Women 's Institute. Mrs. J. A. Easton presided and welcomed Mrs. L. Stratford as a new member. Sympathy was expressed with the sick, special mention being made of Mrs. Jensen, who was in hospital and to whom flowers were being sent. All stood in silence in memory of the late Miss Jessie Morgan, who had been a very active member of the Rangiwahia W.I. Sympathy in their loss was expressed to Mrs. H. Stern and the Morgan family. Mrs. Easton thanked all members for rallying round to make Mrs. j Aislabie's send-oif such a happy ' function. She suggested that there i be a bring-and-buy stall at the : July meeting. to raise. funds for the ; afflliation fees. ' On the suggestion j of Mrs. W. Easton, it was decided that there would be a lend-lease I and saies table at each meeting in l charge of Mesdames C. Veale and J. j Sinclair. Anyone requiring the ; loan of articles such as patterns, i knitting needles, etc., would hand lin their written 'request, which ! would be read out and their ' requirements fulfilled if possible. j Priced articles for sale might be | placed on . the table, the institute j retaining only a few pence on the ] transaction. Following a ballot, Mrs. C. Stern | was appointed delegate to the 1 annual conference to be held in ■ Wellington on July 24, 25 and 26. The competition at the group ' rally to be held at Koputaroa in July is a brr;^n sultana loaf, the j recipe for which may be obtained ! from the secretary (Mrs. R. Rob'erts). A donation of £1 was made • to the fund to provide a ' new bicycle for the W.I.'s hospital visitor. * ^ The holding of a birthday party was discussed and it was unani- ; mnu^ly decided to hold it over until ( a later date. Following afternoon ' tea served by the hostesses, Mesi dames J. Grifflths, J. T. Bovis and T. Bell. Mrs. Bovis read a most interesting and humorously v/ritten ^ extract from a book on the making ■ of money at the Royal Mint, Lon- : don. Two social competitions were . held, one being won by Mrs. Leng- ' Ward and the other by Mrs. Veale. Competitions resulted: — Single bloom: Mrs. A. E. Tremewan 1, Mrs. T. Bell 2, Mrs. A. Richards 3. Cluster: Mrs. Sinclair 1, Mrs. Veale 2. Jar decorated Avith berries: Mrs. j Sinclair 1, Mrs. Peni 2. The hostesses and room stewards appointed for July were Mesdames A. Richards and W. Radford.
