INDIA STAVES OFF INNINGS DEFEAT

India met quiek-setbaeks in attempting to stave off defeat in * the teBt against England at Lords, losing thrce wickets in 20 minutes. v H^rdstaff was unconquered for 205 in EnglancL's first innings. He batted a little over five hours and he hit 16 f ours. He and Gibb in a solid fifth wieket partnership .of 182 in 170 minutes put Eugland in a very sound positiou. The batting of Ilardstaff and Gibb was in eontraat. Hardstaff was confident and seorcd fr'eely despite- the aecurato bowlihg of Amarnath and Hazare, and Gibb was ' painstakingly sloiv. His 60 included only three fours. Mankad, despite India ;s leeway, batted very bfightly, making 63 in 85 minutes. He hit a six and seven fours.
