Howeverj altliougli there are a nuniber of notable American absentees, ineluding the new open ehampion Lloyd Mangrum, Byrou Nelson and Ben Hogan, the Americans are sending a very strong team to St. Andrew's. It iuciudes Barazen, winner of the British open in 1932; Tommy Armour, winner in 1931; Jolinny Bulla, runner-up to Burton in the last champiouship in 1939; Jinimy Demaret, one of the present leading American professionals; and Lawson Little. Among other prominent overseas players entered are , youth Africa's Bobby Loehc, Graham 1'acker, B. Nicuwenhays, Australia's \'on Nida, Joe Kirkwood, (now domiciled in America), JSpain's Mariano .Sanz and Mereellino Albaran, Ilolland's G. 1'. de Wit, Belgiuin's F. van Donclc, Eire's Ilam* Bradshaw, and Hweden's llarry Karlsson. Burton, who reeently failed by nine strokes to qualify for the American open, will be defending the title. Other British competitors will be Ilenry Cotton, Dai ltees, J. Adams, Arthur Bees, Frank Jowle (professionals), 'llobert Bweeney, 0. II. Tolley, S. B. Williamson, Alex Kyle (amateurs). .lames Brueu, tlie new British aniateur ehampion, is not competing. The first two qualifving rounds are beiug played on .July l and 2 and 100 of the 201 entrants will qualify for the 72 holes of Ihe champiouship proper. Bpecial arraugements have been made by the Eoyal amrAncicnt Glub for control of spectators who, on this occ*- , sion, will be relegated to "sideiines" i behind rope barriers.
