WEATHER BALLOON GOES UP 18 MILES
W . , AUCKLAND, June 24. The remarkable height of 95,885 feet or 18.1 miles was reached by a radiosoade balloon released from the Auckland Weather office at Mechanics'^ Bay on Sunday morning, This is the greatest height to wkich sueh a balloon has aseend'ed, in the experience of nieteorological officers in Auckland, the average level being about .60,000 to 70,000 feet, Regular asceuts of r.adiosonde bstlloons g.r e made for meteorological purposes. The balloons at sea level have a digm.eter of 6ft. fiin. As they gain beight ttnd pass through gfadually decreased air ppessure, . they expand until they finally bur^t.
