Von Neurath opened his defenee with the assertion that the numerous"' impossible provisions of the Versailles Treaty contained the roots of National Socialism and brought the world economic unrest. Von Neurath was accused of participating in a'eonspiracy of aggression as Poreign. Minister while Germany was rebuilding her war machinefy and also as the protector of Bohemia and Moravia. He allegedly signed the order for the exeeution of mOre than 300 studerits of Prague University following anti-Nazi demonstrations. Claiming that he served under liberal, conservative and democratic governmcnts with the sole aim of seeuring a peaceful redress foi- injuries suffered by the Fatherland, von Neurath compared hiraself with Vansittart who served both conseryative and labour governments.
