PARAPARAUMU NOTES

(From "Chronicle" Correspondent) The Paraparaumu Women's Institute heid its June meeting in the Anglican Hall, presided over by Mrs. Hornsby*. There was a very good attendance. The ' meeting opened with the singing of the institute song .and the aspirations." All stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs. E. K. Bain, a member of the institute whose cheery and helpful presehce will be sorely missed by all. Two new members were welcomed and enrolled. A special welcome was given to Mrs. Banks on her return after a lengthy stay in hospital. Mrs. Watson, a member of a Canterbury institute, who is on a visit to the Nortn Island, was present. Mrs. Caterer, who was recently married, was ' presented with a bouquet and best wishes for her future married happiness. Mrs. Hornsby spoke briefly on her holiday trip to the Sounds. Mrs. phipps gave an interesting talk on the work of the Blue Cross in caring for the animals there during the German occupation. Miss Clarkson gave a demonstration on the making of rugs from old discarded woollen garments and was accorded a'hearty vote of thanks. A competition for general funds was won by Mrs. Patterson and Miss E. Lynch. The flower competijion was won by Mrs. Sheargold and Mrs. Clarkson was second. A roll call, "Some Pets I Have Ownea," called forth many very interesting ancl amusing animal stories. Afternocn tea was served and the meeting conciuded .with the singing of the National Anthem. A largely-attended service was held ip the Methodist Church for the late Mrs. E. K. Bain, and was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Wright. Many beautiful floral tributes -were received. The funeral later left for the Paraparaumu Cemetery.
