i Personal j Miss Phyllis Allerby Has returned home from a two weeks' holiday at Waitara. The friends of Mrs. K. Woodmass will regret to hear that she is confmed to her bed owing to illness. Pte. Colin Ryder, of Moutoa and formerly of J-Force, entered ■ Palmerston North Hospital to-day to undergo an ' operation. Miss L. Beech, of Messrs. W. H. Gunning's stalf, together wich Miss R. Haley of Mr. Collins' staff, left on a holiday for Auckland last evening. (Mr. L. Lincoln has returned home after spending several months in the Wellington Hospital. Mr. Lincoln is still confined to his bed, and his many friends will wish him a very speedy and complete rec-ov-ery. The condition of Mr and Mrs. K. Ransfield and their young child, who received burns when their dwelling at" Opiki was destroyed by fire on Wednesday night, and wlio are now inmates of the Palmerston' North Hospital,' is reported to be satisfactory. Whitanui Detention Camp The Whitanui ' Detention Camp, which has been in use since November, 1942, has now been disbanded. On Monday trucks will carry the huts lo Wellington where they wixi be used in connection with a transit housing scheme. Football Dance The Tokomaru Football Club held a successful dance in t.he Tokomaru Hall on Thursday evening. Buses orought visitors from Shannon and Palmerston North. During thc evening Mr A. Gillespie, on behalf of the Horowhenua Rugby Union, spoke a few words and outlined the activities of the club. A competition was won by Mr. Hood. Successful Shop Day The Church of Engiand Ladies' Guild heid a most successful shop day on Friday There was a ready rnarkefc for the cakes and vegetables offered for sale. Articles or used clothing were in great demand by the public, who took the opportunity to buy something "off the ration." During the day competitions were held and prizes were won by Mr. A. Third 'and Miss L. Beech. Badminton Competition There was a good attendance at the Shannon Badminton Club's biweekly- club night at the Druids' Hall on Thursday evening. Results of competition matches played were as follows: — A. S. Hyde defeated L. Burling 15 — 12 and Miss J. Pigott defeated Mrs. H. Pope 15 — 13 in a very interesting match. Next Thursday evening an inter-club match will be played with the Ohau Club. Shannon teams will be published later. Painting of Public Buildings The painters aua interior decorators are at present busy at the Shannon Post Office and already the building is looking very smart with its cream and red paintwork. The railway station and railw.ay houses have received their brightening up some time ago, and it adds attractiveness to the town. The next in line of Shannon's public buildings to receive a coat of paint is the municipal buildings. It is understood that this is to be done in the near future. A number of business people have also helped to add a touch of colour to the town with new paintwork.
