Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LONDON, June 20. The Director-General of Artiltery, Major-General W. J. _ Eldridge, has revealed that Britain 's latest guns, secretly developed since the war, are little more than "lightweight drainpipes ' ' which inf antry could carr.y, but are capable of firing heavy shells great distances. The barrel of the new gun is open hoth ends. The gas escapes backwards through a series of tunnels which eliminates kick and make complicated gunmoutiting unnecessary. General Eldridge expressed the view that the drainpipe guns, Which can ' also he used against aircraft, might make the tank obsolete.
