AUCKLAND, June 20. TJie epidemie of burglaries iu Auckland is keeping locksmitlis and sat'emenders busy repairiug safes aud strongroouis vvrecked by explosives. Oue lirm wliicli specialises in this kiud of job is two niouths behiud with its work, and has sliattered safes of all kinds and ffizes belonging to business eoncerns waiting to be mended. Amongst the orders needing attention are five safes and strongr'oom doors damaged in tlie robberies last weekend. Two inassive steel doors of a safe blown open by burglars last year have been stanuing on tlie premises for 10 months pending the hrrival of a shipment of loeks. Apart Jroni the delay and inconvcnience, Hrnis are put to considerable expeuse in liaving safes repaired, . some of the locks alone eosting £15 to replace. Through miscalculation or inexperieuce, the use of explosive often ' only suceeeded in jamming the locking mechanism of a safe. Expert locksmiths have been known, as in a xecent case at Pukekohe, to spond the best part of a dav trying to unfasten them. Bnrglaries have been so numeTous in recent months that many iirms leave empty safes open at night rather than: xisk the expense of repairing them after tliev have been blown open by intruders in their search for valuables. i
