DISTRICT HIGHWAYS COUNCIL CONSIDERS ESTIMATES

MAJOR.WORKS PROPOSiSD, FOR THIS AREA Mr. T. A. Johnston, district engineei P.W.D-, Wellington, -was re-electcd chairman of. No. 9 District Higliwavs Council at the annual meeting whiclt was held in Palmers(ton North yesterday, Messrs. G. A. Monk (Horow'henua) and W. E. Barber (Manawatu) were re eleeted to the executive. Year's Operations in Review In comprehensive review of the year's operations the following information was given: — Maintenance sealing eompleted, 40 miles 5 chains, comparecl with 38 miles 60 chains last year; bridges, lineal feet, 165ft, against 677ft.; surveys eompleted 4 miles 40 chains, eompared with 5 miles 60 chains. 3 The bridging comprised the comple tion of the Orona River bridge in concrete, 165ft long on tlie LongburnTaugimoana main highway (Manawatu Countv") . Maintenance sealing_in the district amounted to 40 miles 5 chains.' ^The chairman remarkqd that the enginecrs (Messrs. A. R. Acheson and 11. J. Wotten) were to be congratulated 011 the results achieved. . The mileage in No. 9 highway" district was shown at 307.48 sealcd or paved surfaces and 215.46 gravel oi maeadam surfaces, making a total mileage of 523.14. Additional Main Highways Applications for additional main highways were considered as uiuler: — Kiwitea County: Rangiwahia-Apili, 9 miles 20 chains, and OliingaitiPembcrton, 12 miles. Kairanga County: Palmerston NorlliBunnytliorpe (Raiiway Road), 3 mile:30 chains. Pohangina County: Ashhurst Pohangina extensiou, 45 chains; aml Kimbolton- Apiti extensiou, 3 mile. 7 chains. Manawatu County: Green Road (Awahuri-Kopane), 3 miles; Himatangi Beach road, 5 miles; and Oliakea ex tension, 40 chains. Feilding -Borough: West Street, 60 clrains. This street was rev.oked as a main highway in 1939 wlien Enst Stree: was declared a main highway in ex change. Estimates for Current Year Of the total proposed expenditure oi' £436,3 06, £323,000 is for works pro posed by tlie P.W.D. and £93,000 for applications by counties and boroughs The subsidv voted last year wa£357,736 and subsidy expended was £339,380. This year's expenditure is for maintenance (£3 75,035), renewals (£8103) and iinprovements (£232,968), making a total of"£416,306. Major Works for 1946-47 Proposed major works considered at the meeting ineluded the following: Departmental works: Deviaiion at Whirokino Britlge (90 chains), ostimate £37,000, voto £3 0,000 on account. County works: Reconstruction and sealing programme covering 24 miles 011 Longlnirn -Tangimoana main highway (6-1 miles), Ranglotu-Rongotea (19 miles) and Foxton-Shannon main highway (7 miles), to be spread over four or 6ve years. — The chairman remarked tliat the surveys would be undertaken this year.
