STATE HOUSE CONSTRUCTION
MORE RAPID PROGRESS LIKELY MAYOR' S REPRESENTATIONS The slow progress being made towards the completion of the six State. houses in Chamberlain Street was referred to at this month's meeting of the Levin Borough Council hy the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin), who advised that as a result of representations he had made it was now hoped that the work would proceed without further delay. His Worship said he had spoken to the contractors, hut they had been unable to say definitely when the houses would be completed. ' He had ■ that day telephoned the Assistant Direetor of Housing Construction (Mr. R. B. Hammond) who was under the impression that more progress had been made than was the case. Mr. Hammond promised that he would do eyerything possible to facilitate ihe early completion . of these units, and to that end would arrange with the district building controiler (Mr. G^ .A. Swanger) - to come to Levin and discuss the subject on the spot. Continuing, the Mayor said Mr. Hammond had informed him that a contract had been let for an additional eight State houses at the end of Lincoln Place, and he hoped to call tenders shortly for still more . on the land acquired in Winchester Street. Mr. Hammond had also said that the department realised. the need for houses in Levin in keeping with its progress. Cr. F. E. Parker enquired whether it would be . possible to ask the department for a larger. . number of three-bedroom units. The Mayor replied that he would raise the matter.
