HASTINGS THIS WEEK

HORSES MOVE ON A number of tlie winter performers seen in action at Awapuni on Saturday will move on to Hastings to race at the Hawke's Bay fixture whieh opeps tliis week and concludes next week. Judging by the entries there will be better class horses at Hastings, but if the going is heavy some of the form should work out well. The best of the steeplechasers seen at Awapuni was Ked Glare, who was conceding his victor a stone and a half when he was defeated by Epping. If he takos his plaec in the field he is liable to meet stronger opposition than heeneountered last week-end, but with the consequent lessening of his weight he could not be held cheaply. He is a prolicient jumper and is seasoned, two factors whieh will eount heavily in his favour. However, if his naine faiis to j appear among the aceeptors, no oue need be surprised as there will be three davs ' raciug on his home course next month. Cross-country horses who raeed fairly well at Awapuni and might do better shortly are Indiau Sun and Kilmanagh. Abbey Lu must have greatly disappointed those wiio majle him favourite. He had every chance and on tlie day was not nearly good enough. Mary Jo, winner of the Ngata Hack Hurdles, won the race a year ago and t had not won in the iriterval. She j looked the pick of the field on Saturday i aiul won well, but most of those she beat are never likely to distinguisli themselvjes. Ellerton Hall, winner of the Akitio Hack and Huuters' Steeplechase, was bred at Dannevirke by Mr. J. C. Kcnnedy. He is by Nightly from Oranoa, a mare bred by Mr. W. 11. Gaisford. Oronoa was by Lackhain from Ohiwia, by Elysian. Ellerton IlalJ is on the upgrado and might win again in the lower grade. Northfield, his principal opponent, is improving with racing and anotlier likely to do better shortly is High Morale, who races in thc same interests as Northfield. Endurance won his second race this scason at Awapuni wlien he beat The Monarch. In the earlier race he easilv j defeated Voltaire. This time he beat j The Mouarch just as easily. A free jgalloper and good jumper, Endurance should not have reached the end of his tethcr yct. He is a six-year-old cliestnut gehling bv Tractor from Lady Red, by Prince Willoynx from Haku wai, by the Carbiue horse Campflre, from j Seagull, by St. Leger. Ho is owned jand trained by Mr. R. Grcgory, Clive, i who won the Grand Natioiml Hurdle j Race with Flying Spy. i Iniperial won tlie Manawatu Winter J Cup very nicely, but his success was j contributed to the excellent ruu he enjoyed. From the outset he was well placed beliiud the leaders and for a while he was in a clear space by himself. He moved to the front as the field were turning into the straiglit and nothing was able to head liiiu in- the run homc. rf Ilakhiy got tor+within less | tlinn a iength of lmn aiul might have , boon niore troublesome had he been free j to make his run when he wanted to. i Arco's fourth with 9.11 on'liis bacli j was good enough to entitle him to eonisideration shortly. Lord Darnley and jDink's Own, botli of wliom like heavy j going, wero coiuplete failures and the j well-fancied Flahuluk was not very inispiring. Higli Ordcr was aJvvavs in the | picture and linished third at long odds. I He is partial to bnd grouud and this 1 was oue of his best performances. i By wiiining the Ruahine Handicap j Cooraclare departed from the hack ranks. His win was one of the most deeisivo of a day of decisive victories. He is adept in heavy ground and in the j straiglit rau right awav from his op- { ponents. After his success in heavy j going at Otaki a week earlier 1ns jdividend was surprisingly good. There is no excuse at all for Prince f Wanaka, a heavily backed favourite. j Cooraclare outelassed him. Of those j who finished close to the placed horses j oue of the most- likely to improve is Court Judge. Lady Chips won tlie Rongotea Ilandi- | cap so well tluit hcr prospects of fur- | ther success are bright. There should | not be a grcal deal of difiiculty in plac ; ing lier wliere she can win. Bay Kobe I rau right up to his best and had a | pcrfcct passage, but was not quite j good enough. Ganges, third, should be j j u liis element from now 011 and ouglit to improve a little. Foxella was racing over bis right distance when he tacklcd the Alangawhata Handicap, one niile and a quarter. After occujiying a leading position | to the half niile, lie receivcd an oponiiig 1 011 Ihe rails aiul went througli to tlie lcad. Blauket trailed liiiu to the straiglit aiul llien challenged, but Foxella was always going thc better and held BlenUot oJl" witliout a great deai of trouble. Foxella is anotlier who might win again before the winter is througli. Persuade was a big tip for the hack niile and a quarter. Hcr chance was I affected at tlie start and she lost some [ valuable ground before getting properI ly under vvay. IShe linished well to be third, but she was seven lengths from , the winner. Incline, who had won at j Otaki and Woodville, was last most of J tlie way and linished stronglv to be fourth. Havildar ran a fair race, but failed after having every chance. Anotlier failure was Honiespun, a stroug fancy, who "linished fiftli.
