McCREADY A FINE GRAPPLER
(By
Earl McCready is uxidoubedly the oesc wresuier ever to visiu New Zeaxand, and this season wiil probaoly oe his last, as he may retire when ne reuurns to Canada. He will probaoxy do so undefeated. Weighmg i7sl. 111b., he is still as agiie as ever, and reiies on a good aeai of experience when in difiiculties. He xs- one of the most scientific and ciean wrestiers ever seen in tnis councx'y. On many occasions during nis career in New Zealand he nao oeen deieaued, but he nas aiways regamed his titre, and at present mere is no man in the country wno oan aefeat mm. "Wnile wrestling, xie oite.n banies his opponents- oy encouraging tnem to do ihe attacicing. When he seems to be at a disaavantage he will eompietely surpriae tnem, and turn tne tabies ^ompieifciy. He has oeen known to do tnis on numercus occasions with SllO.P.ftSS.
in tne first bout of the Wellington Wrestling Ciubs season, McAjicady. usea unese tactics on Blomneia, who iaued to counter them. Biomfield gave MGCready a numoi joils wnicn looked to Blom.iCid, as well at, to the audience, to taking toii of tne Canadian; aowever, McCreaay suddeniy repned with two iiard jolts whicn jciit Bioiiiiieid to tne mat. Beiore ae couid lecover McCready dumped xjim tnree tirnes, and Blomned was anaoie to continue, and McCreaay \vas awarded the bout. ivicCicaay repeated these tactics .ii nis oout witn Clayourne last inursday night in Weiiingcon to sccre another success. McCready was always on the aiert for any of CiayGomnes specialities, and "The oiiauow ' did not succeed to any cxuciit in using them eifectively. ihis reason may be added as a posoiDle solution to Ciaybourne's aefeat. jtictri McCready is, in my view, prouaoiy the Dest wrestier who has jver competed for the Empire jnampionsnip title, and I wouid not be surprised to see him retire undefeated. Ciayoourne did not extend Katan niuch when these tv/o fought last daturday night at Palmerston North. The bout was not as interesting as anticipated, and many jpeciators were aisappointed. Fred Adkins, the tactful Australian wrestier, is said to be commg to New Zealand in the near iuuure, and will compete for the Empire title. Adkins, who has visxued New Zealand on various occasions before the war, is well-known in the wrestling world, and put up some very good performances when he was here. It is reported that he is in good nick, and will be a good match for wrestiers who are I already here in New Zealand. | Jim Londos, the world champion | heavy-weight wrestier, is reported ; to be on his way to New Zealand, j and should arrive next montn. ; Londos cannot win the British I Empire title as he Is an American, ; but McCready, the holder, can j attempt to win the world title, and | it is quite possible he may succeed. Nexit Thursday, at the Wellingi ton . Town Hall, John Katan will | meet Loi'ty Blomfield. At ChristI church, on the same night, Lou j Newman meets Earl McCready. I Clarrie Gordon has improved so ! much since he was defeated by Tonimy Burns that his . manager iFred Atkins) is confident that if he meets Burns again he is eertain of victory. During this month, Gordon wiil fight Patrick, and his chances of beating the Australian are quite encoura'ging. It wouid not be a sfirprise to his followeirs if he beat him. Atkins recentiy stated that Gordon is doing a good deal of training, and has never been in such a condition before. He has developed a harder punch and has gained a few pounds in weight. Roy Stevens, middle and lightweight champion of New Zealand, has accepted a challenge from / Gecrge ' Allen for a fight for the ,dght-heavyweight title. At date has not yet been fixed but the Auckland Boxing Association advises that the match will be held as soon as possible.
