TRAMPERS VISIT MANGAHAO
LEVIN CLUB'S OUTING • t -4 Last Sunday a- large. number of members qj ' the Levin- Waiopehu Tramping Club visited the Mangaore . power . statiop and the surrounding hills. In excellent weather the 24 members left Levin and proceeded to .Mangaore, where they were shown over the power house. The party dfvided into two groups while being- shown over and the inspection proved most interesting. They left'the power house at 10.30 and climbed the pipe line to the surge chamber, where there was a short spell, after which they climbed through more open but steeper country to the bush edge, and eventually found a track -vihich finally, after nearly 30 minutes tramping, came out on thev cleared top of Te Paki (2185 feet)\ Here lunch was partaken of and the billy boiled. Some good views were obtained, and the main northern Tararua peaks were plainly seen, as well as many northern ridges and the Horowhenua plains. After lunch the trampers made their way northwards along the main ridge, and after reacliing a low saddle took a subsidiary ridge which led down to the Arapeti' Dam (1050 feet) . After some time spent in inspecting the surroundings, some members returned to the power station by way of the saddle in the main ridge and a stream leading down towards the station, while the majority returned by the five mile road over the hills ad-thence back to the station. The billy was again boiled, after which the pdrty proceeded. home, ha-ving spent' a most enjoyable day. The leader was Mr. L. Rolston. Members of the party were appreciative of the time given by officials at the power house in conducting them over it.
