COMMUNISTS' PLEA FOR UNITY TURNED DOWN

WELLINGTON, Juuc 14. A proposal for electoral uuity liutween the New Zealand Labour Partv, New Zealand. Communist Party and New Zealand Federation of Labour, for the return of the Labour Government, was keenly supported by Communist speakers at the annuai conference of the Federation of Labour today, but wa^ clearly defeated. The proposal came from the Wellington brancli of the New Zealand Car penters' and JoiiiersCUnion, who argued that this measure would unite the efforl of all progressive people to secure a Labour victory at the next election. A further motion, supported by Communists, but rejected by the conference, was that all representatives of the Federation of Labour appointed to confer Yvith the New Zealand Labour Party and other organisations, should be eleeted witliout regard to political opinion or attachment. Democratic Labour Party supporters raised the issue as it afl'ected them but there was no resolution in tho ruatter.
