OTAKI FORM REVIEWED
(By, "False Rail") Colonel Bogey, although top weight, did not run as well as was expected irt-.the Cassino Steeples at Otaki on Saturday, and his showmg could be said to be very poor among the class he opposed. He will have todmprove on this effort co be considered in the Manawatu oteeples this coming Saturday. When Gynee Lou won the Achilles Maiden Plate No. 1, she opened her winning account for this season. By the way she won it will not- be long before she repeats the performance. The Gynerium filly had been unlucky previously, having filled a few minor placings, but scoring no wins. Both Otaki-trained Relampago and Blue Orchid failed to fill their engagements on Saturday, but if they had started would have orobably had a good deal of supjort, as their form recently showed improvement. The reason for their scratching is not known. After her spell, Tetramarch caught punters napping when shc| ran an excellent race for second in the Achilles Maiden No. 2 last Saturday. Although she never looked iike catching the winner, she came up with a good run after being well jack early. She may improve on this performance. Backed down to second favourite, the Coronach gelding Accepted failed to run as well as cxpected.j He made a forward movc on thej turn but was one of the first to be beaten. Tifox made such a break on the field in the Messines Handicap that many thought that he would not be caught, but he began to tirel badly three furlongs from homej and, called upon for an effort in the j straight, had no rescrve of speea.j A shorter distance would have suit- j ed him admirably. Blackwater ran a good race for j fourth, but was expected to do bet- i ter in the Pacific Hack Handicap. j Broughton was the main attraction, j and he was sent out. at short odds. Blackwater had not run ffor somej time and his race suggested that he is nearing form. Rothnic ran an improved race and handled the going well. Success should , come to this Foxlight gelding soon.o Silver Rod and High . Order carried a good deal of sup- ! port in the main event at Otaki, but both ran poor races. Hakim may have been more trouble to the winner if he had not had a bad j check on the turn. He will be in . demand at Awapuni. Alcyone and Flahuluk are improving and both are nearing form. Flahuluk ran a good sixth, after being second to last in the straight. Alcyone was always handy, and gained or lost no ground in the straight.
