YOUNG FARMERS' DECISION
By Telegravh—
INVERCARGILL, JuneN12. The Young Farmers' Clubs national memorial to members killed in World War II, will take the form of speeial wings added to Massey and Lincoln Agricultural Colleges for the aceonrmodation of short cotirse students. This decision was made by the annual conference of the New Zealand Pederation of Young Farmers' Clubs held at Invercargill. Opposition to the proposal was voieed by members of the western Southland district committee who said they felt the memorial should not be wliolly utilitarian. The idea of a national memorial wa3 first mooted at the annual meeting of the organisation in 1942 and sinoe then various proposals have been considered. Tn a final report and recommendation submitted today, a sub-committee set up at the last annual meeting, stated a scheme had been submitted wbieh comprised provision of aecommodation for short course students at the two agricultural colleges, by building in both cases a speeial "wing" for the use of Young Farmers 5 Club members. The cost in each ease would be heavy. At an estimate, £20,000 would be required for the two wings. Having considered the scheme and the merits of all other proposals, the sub-committee considered the proposal for the building of wings to be tbe most commendable and recommended tbat it be adopted, that £20,000 be collected over two vears | if possilde, and tbat the quotas be: — Auc1 Hnd £0500, Wellington £0500, Canterlmrv £4000 and Otago-Southland j £.">000.* j TIlc Dominion executive* approved tbe sub-committee 's rerommendations ! and the Oollege authorities approved ■the scheme. j The recommendation was adopted on ; the motion of Mr. L. 8. Aitchison i (Auckland) and Mr. J. D. G. McLauglilan (Wellington), j Mr. K. 11. llargest, western Southi land, moved that at no time should ap- ! plication be made to the Slate for financial assistance. Ile added that altliough Western Southland members opposed the scheme, thev would assist. Mr. | Aitchison seeonded Alr. llargest 's moj tion which was lost. It was decided that before Stnte asj sistance by way of subsidy .was sought, the mai t or should be discussed by the j four provincial coiincils. The Auckland I delegat es asked that thoir votes be rej corded against that motion. More than a hundred delegates. some j from as far away as North Auckland, al temled the annual meeting.
