HOROWHENUA COLLEGE
ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS The bi-monthly meeting of the Horowhenua College Advisory Committee was held on Tuesday ev'ening, Mr. F. H. Hudson presiding. Also present were Mrs. C. Bartholomew and Messrs. A. Haley (actingprincipal), A. C. Kennerley, W. G. Glark, J. G. Horn, G. Matthews, D. ?. Todd and E. D. Bell. A letter was ' received from the Levin BOrough Council thanking the college for the use of the seats at a recent welcome home to returned servicemen. — Received.
Mr. T. P. Mercer wrote advismg of his resignation from the position of caretaker owing to his state .of health. The committee decided to call for applications for the position. Mr. Hudson" told the meeting ihat a letter of appreciation had oeen sent to Mr. Mercer for his good work at the college. A deputation consisting * of Messrs. J. Penny and M. Staples, representing the Horowhenua Coliege Old Pupils' Association, waited on the committee to ask for cooperation in the matter of a proposed war memorial, to be erected in honour of the three former pupils who paid the supreme sacrifice in the war, and also to bear in memory all those Who had served overseas. The proposed memorial would consist of four lighted pillars, three of them to each bear the name of one of those who had lost his life and the fourth to bear all the names of those old boys who had served overseag. A sub-com-mittee consisting oi Mrs. Bartholomew and Messrs. Clark and Hudson was set up to co-operate in all ways possible with the Old Pupils' Association in their everlasting xnd worthy project. * Mr. Mattnews advised the meeting that the Wellington Education Board had made no further progiess with the appointment of a permanent principal.
Acting-Principal's Report The acting-principal's report read as follows: — 'T?he roll number on June 1, 1946, was 445 divided as follows: Boys, 2212; girls 224. Mr. W. Hall took up his duties at the beginning of the term. It has now been possible to re-open the engineering shop. Mr. Calder is expected to resume teaching at the beginning of July. Miss Jonathan is relieving in his place. Mr. Andrews, from Hawera Technical * High School, has been appointed to assist with the theoretical side of the wood and metalwork departments He is expected to commence duties at the beginning of July. Miss Ornsbergh is relieving in his place. "The motor mower is functioning again and it has been possible to get all the lawns in order. Subsequent keeping of them should be easy now that they are undeT control. Mr. Bevan, the temporary groundsman, continues to put the grounds and gardens in order. Mr. Bell continues to act as cardtaker owing to the illness of Mr. Mercer. Winstone's representatives were in the district inspecting tiling jobs which were carried out by them in the last few years. Authority was given to fchem to replace all tiles which they thought necessary on the roofs of the college buildings. "The departmental inspectors. Messrs. Alexander and Hobbs and Miss Mackenzie visited the college last week for the purposes of inspection. On Friday, June 7, Messrs. Brookes, Clark and Miss Miles, of the Vocational Guidance Centre, spoke to all pupils and interviewed seniors individually to advise them on their careers."
