AUCKLAND, June 11.. Three years and 10 montlis after Ameriean Marines assaulted the Japanese. positions in the Bolomons, the United Btates Army base at Guadalcanar has been elosed. Colonel Robert G. Howie; tlie last Army eommander on ! the island, said in Auckland that the j base was closed last week, 25 men being left at Henderson Field to maintain the ! airstrip. Aliles of road way and dumps of petrol and equipment have been de- { stroyed or left in the jungle. AU the! piers on the island have been dismantled. * - Colonel Howie said he thought British administration would maintain sorae of the roads as before the war. 1 Communications on the island were ! very poor. The last remaining United States Army base in the South Paeific, that at; Noumea, New Coledonia, will be closed on July 15. A ship will transport about 1400 men, the majority of the garrison, to United Stat.es on June 20.
