TROPICAL TYPHUS CURE CLAIMS
American doctors believe they have discovered a cure for the tropical disease scrub typhus. Addressing the American College of Physicians at Philadelphia. Dr. Francis Blake, Dean of Yale Medical School, announced the discovery. Treatment employs a new drug containing para amino-benzoic acid, Dr. Blake said. Scrub typhus caused considerable losses of troops in New Guinea. India and Burma, and has been fatal in more than 25 per cent of cases. Head of Sydney University's School of Tropical Medicine, Professor Harvey Sutton, said the American report was very encouraging. "We have been working on the causation of scrub typhus but had not considered para aminobenzoic acid in the treatment," he said. "A cure would mean a great deal to men stationed in the tropics." The disease (schistomiasis) might not manifest itself for years. Schistomiasis could affect_the brain, liver and blood, and tests would be contipued to establish the efficacy of present treatment.
