GENERAL MEETING HELD A general meeting of the Shannon branch of the Returned Services Association was held in Laurvig's Hall on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Ritchie (vice-president) presided and in attendanee were Messrs. O. Tippler, S. Speneer, ,K. Thomson, D. Cole, E. Veaie, R. Higgott, E. Morris, J: Jones, N. Callesen, W. Third, C. Guerin, A. Storey, J. Elvines, R. Hook, R. Quinlan, V. Bateman and J. Sinclair. ! Apoiogies were received from I Messrs. F. Thurston, J. Aitchison and E. P. Gunning. The meeting was advised . that financial membership to date was Shannon 134 and Tokomaru 25. which made a total for the branch of 159. Roll membership stood at Shannon 185 and Tokomaru 44, a total of 227. The secretary advised that the association had more Shannon personnel in view, but some were slow in joining up with the branch. Mr. W. E. Behrens was transferred to the New Brighton R.S.A. and Mr. M. F. Taylor to the Wellington R.S.A. The saies of poppies for 1946 showed returns from Shannon as £26 18s 8d and Tokomaru as £13 12s, a total of £40 10s 8d. A total of 116 poppies had been carried over until next vear.
It was noted that Messrs. J. Ritchie and R. Higgott represented Ihe j Shannon branch at the Levin R.S.A. | re-union. Messrs.- E. Morris and J. i Jones were the Shannon represen1 tatives at the Ashhurst re-union. It was decided to file the pro'gramme of proceedings of the Ashhurst function for reference in the future. It was brought to the notice of members that the secretary had a • supply of badge protectors for sale i at a few pence each. It was pointed j out that these protectors wouid I save the cost of replacing a .badge, plus advertising for one lost. A letter was received from the Levin Pipe Band, thanking the branch for its donation and cxpressing thanks and appreciation for the manncr in which the band j was entertained while in Shannon on Anzac Day. It was noted that the outgoings for hospital comi'orts was £1 12s 7d to date, and it was decided to call a meeting of the dance committee with the object of organising a dance to build up the comforts fund. It was resolved that the secretary ■should* write- tO""the- district- vicepresident (Mr. H. B. Burdekin), with the object of having him visit the next general meeting and addressing members on matters of general R.S.A. intercst. In reference to a letter received from the secretary of the Shannon Industries Committee, asking' for Ihe R.S.A. 's assistance in having the Whitanui Block sub-divided for soldier settlement, Mr. R. Hook advised that Mr. Bennett was coming up to inspect this block in the near future. It was proposed by Mr. V. Bateman that the branch should make enquiries from the War Assets Realisation Board with the view of purchasing the mess hall at the Whitanui Defaulters' Camp for reerection in Shannon as a soldiers' club rooms. Messrs. J. Ritchie and V. Bateman were appointed to interview the board concerned and report at a general meeting of the branch. Mr. R. Hook presented his report of the proceedings of the New Zealand R.S.A. conference, held in Wellington recently. The meeting conclud.ed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
