SPEED OF 1500 M.P.H. FOR PLANES

WASHINGTON, June 9. The Navy Department announced that it has cleveloped. a revoiutionary "rain" jet engine, weighing 70 pounds and developing upwards oi 3000 horsepower, which is capahle of driving a plane at 1500 miles an honr. The ram jet is sometimes caliecl "the flying stovepipe", and works at high speeds only. it will he switched on when rocket power has brought the plane '-s speed up to 800 miles an hour. The operating principle is that the engine takes in air compressed by the plane 's speed. The injection of fuel causes an explosion, resulting in exhanst thrust propulsion similar. to that of the standard jet motor. The advantage of the ram principle is that there are no moving parfs. Tests so far have been limited to sending experimental engines hnrtling into the air on their own, like rockOts.
