GISBORNE, June 9. The Prime Minister and Minister oi Native Alfairs, accompanied by Messrs. D. W. Coleman and T. Omana, M.P. 's, visited Hiruharema, East Coast, 011 Saturday and participated in unve.il.ing a memorial to the late Mrs. Matefoa Reedy, grandmother of Lieutenant Ngarimu, V.C., and leading woman of the Ngatiporou tribe. The eereinonies were attendod by over 2900 natives and Europeans. The Prime Minister paid an eloquent tribute to the personalfty and beneJicent influence of Ihe late Mrs. Reedy. He said equality of tlie raecs in the Dominion was a vital plank in tlie Labour Government 's platform aird referred to social services which tlie Maoris shared wHh ihe Europeans. During the day Maoris and Europeans present contributcd £2000 towards the marae funds. Refcrring to a suggestion liy >Sir Apirana Ngata who conducted proceedings, the Premier said this was a time5 when the Govet'nment might be asked to make provision for the encourage m6nt of native arts and crafts^to wards which Sir Apirana Ngata had made an ■outstajiding contribution.
