VICTORY DAY SIDELIGHTS
Reeeived Sunday, 7.10 p.m. LONDON, June 9. All tlie fireworks asftembled for a twohour display at Hornehurek, Essex, went off in two minutes when sparks fell on the stacked boxes and scnt uji everytliing in a short burst. The crowd rau for safety but flying fireworks eauglit some and caused some damage. Several roclcets ignited accidentally in a Lancashire village and shot into tlie crowd, injuring seven. With queues up to a mile long, the. underground stations in Central London had to be closed periodically to prevent choking Te platforms and entrances, as Victory Day millions attempted to return to their homes. After midnight thousands gave up hope when tlie time for the last trains approached and the queues had not diminished. They settled down in parks, gardens and doorways to wait for the first transport Sunday morning. London had taken in more than it could handle in the time even though the - complex underground system was earrying one packed train swiftly after another.
