EMPLOYMENT SURVEY
The District Employment Officer, Mr. L. W. Cozens, has completed the survey of fifteen additional. industries. The labour content oi the group covered is as follows, the vacancies in each industry being given in parenthesis: — Builders: Joinery, males 139 (8l,-females 2; furniture and cabinefc making, males 81, females 8;. other woodwork, males 44, females 2. Machine tools and repairs, males 90 (12), females 5; electrical apparatus, males 38 (2), females' 6; cycles and motor vehicle assembly, males 7; repairs and maintenance cycles and motor vehicles, males 441 (24) , females 41 (1) ; instruments, males 14 (2), females 3; clotihng, males 42 (4) , females 347 (95) ; lootwear repair, males 13, females l;_textile, males 212 "(202), females 82 (91); brick and tile, males 73 (5) , females 2; lime and cement, males 78 (6), females 2; engineering, males 205 •15), females 31 .(1); road transport, males 372 (1), females 37 (1). The -outstanding feature of this group are the numbSr* of workers engaged in the j-epair and maintenance of motor vehicles and road transport industry, aiid they indioate a considerable increase on previous surveys. The vacancies are in general for skilled men with the exception of the' textile. industry, and while these kre shown at a very high figure for males. their employment depends upon the filling of the female vacancies; which at the moment is an impossible proposition owing to the extreme shortage of this type of labour.
