GOLF TOURNAMENT
BUCKLEY CLUB'S FIXTURE The Buckley Golf Club held a successful two-day tournament on Sunday and Monday, There was a good attendanceJi of local players from Mangaore and Buckley and several visitors were also present. CJnpleasant weather mar'red the play on Sunday afternoon and again on Monday, in spite of this the greens were fast. The Buckley links are rapidly improving due to the work that has been put into them during the past few weeks, and before long should be back in pre-war condition. The starters got the players away rapidly and there was no hold-up of competitors. The luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements were in the capable hands of Mesdames C. Stern, E. Wilson, T. Boon and H. Pope. At the completion of play on Monday afternoon, the vice-presi-dent of the club, Mr. R. S. Downes, thanked all those who had attended and helped to make the gathering the success it had been. He also thanked the ladies who had so efficiently carried out the luncheon and afternoon tea arrangements. Those present expressed their approval of these remarks in no uncertain manner. Mr. Downes then called upon Mrs. C. Stern to present the trophies. At the conclusion of the proceedings, Mr. J. Mabey, on behalf of the competitors, thanked the club for its effort in providing a most enjoyable week-end to all who had participated in the tournament. A feature of the tournament was the provision made for • first year players, there being a number of events for these newcomers to the game. Results are as follows: — Buckley championship, J. Mabey; runnerup, C. Stern; Ihakara handicap, K. Thomson; runner-up, H. Karina; consolatiori handicap, R. Graham; nnner-up, R. Collins; best gross, E. Wilson; medal, H. Karina; bogey, J. Mabey; stableford, J. Chambers; fourball, E. Wilson and N. Birch. First year: Flight, C. Booker; medal, T. Roach; stableford, A. Bell; bogey; B. Harris: stroke, C. Booker; team match, H. Mabey, J. Mabey, R. Harding and W. Stern (293) 1, V. Pope, C. Stern, H. Stern and F. Ficard (304) and E. Wilson, N. Birch, H. Pope and T. Boon (304) 2 (equal) . The handicap committee advises the following reductions of handicaps: — W. Stern from 21 to 19, H. Karina from 26 to 24, N. Birch from 16 to 15, J. Mabey from 8 to 7, H. Stern from 12 to 10, J. Chambers from 15 to 13 and K. Thomson from 20 to 17.
