Sasanof 's triumphs included the Melbourne Cup, the New Zealand Cup, the Canterburv Jockey Club's Great Autumn Handicap, the Awapuni GoJd Cup twice and the Thompson Handicap. In Mascot 's year he was second in the Auckland Cup. The best stceplechascr who came umler Mr. Coyle was Coalition, who was capable of carrying liuge weights and jumping any country. Oue of CoaliLion's notable feats was to wiu the Wellington Steepleehase in .1021 with 12-11. When he won the Great Northern Steeplechase he liad a steadier of 12.5. Versatile Nukumai Nukuinai is the horse named by Mr. Coyle as the best hurdler lic handicapped. Very poweri'ul, a good juiuper and a galloper of more than average ability, Nukumai was reallv a winter champiou. The dceper the going the more Nukumai excelled. lt is • doubtful if tliere has ever been a more versatile horse than Nukumai. He won good races on the flat, not meroly jumpors' flats, but important hanuicaps. But the highlight of his great career was the old hurdler 's Trentham trcble. At the 1027 Wellington winter meeting he easily won the Whvte Handicap carrying 0.12. Two days later he contested tlie Parliamentary Handicap and, carrying 10. 0, he won more easily and after a lapsc of sinolher two days he won the Winter Hurdles under 11.8, beating the subseipient Grand National liurdle race winner Wharnclill'e, to vvhom he conceded 201b. In his great trclde achie veinent he was ridden by W. J. Bowden, who was his capable pilot in many of his successes. j Tlie turf will be poorer for the dei parture of Mr. Coyle, but he will carry i with him into his retirement the best ' wislies of all.
