A former New Zealander created | history last month at University Paris ! when he becanie the tirst British Empire icitiz.en to be awarded a state doetorate of lotters by the University ar.d capped. He was also the first man to , receive a doetorate while dressed in a kilt. He is Mr. Fraser Mackenzie, i fonnerly of Wellington, who had to | wait from 1939 to 194li before the thesis ; which won him the doetorate, was aci ecpted. He left Xew Zealand in 1929 j to continue his studies at Sorbonne and idivring the war he lectured at St. 1 Andre.vv's University, • Aberdeen, and gave many lectures to serviceinen on j French life aiul culture. Last April he. ; received a eall to Paris and put in a f ew- days x study of diis thesis :\vh'cli had not been read for six years, before appearing for oral examination by pro- ! fessors of the University. When in | Germany he had to travel in uniform as 1 all civilians were considered Germans j by the Russians. Ile was unable to wear uniform as a eivilian in France i and the only article of clothing he had | in his kit was a kilt.
