A meeting of the Shannon Indusfcries aiid' • Development 'CommiLi.ee was held recently, Mr. Rv E. Downes presiding. Also present were Mrs. E. jli. Hyde and Messrs. V. Bateman, D. Fitzgerald and R. Herbert. Correspondence was received from the Minister of 'Works (Hon. R. Semple) in connection with State house construction in Shannon. The chairman sbated that tlie contents of these Jetters' had already been made known to the' public per medium of the Press. It was agreed to ask the Miiiister of. Works that tenders for the new State houses should be ealled before work on the present units was completed so the contractors would not waste any time. The secretary was asked to communicate with the Shannon R.S.A. for assistance in approaching the Rehabilitation Department with regard to breaking up the Whitanui Block for soldier settlement. Letters were received' from establishments concerning industries for Shannon, but it was decided that before the committee could commit itself they would make a liouse-' to-house canvass to ascertain just what labour was available in the district. It was stated that the canvass had been made necessary owing to the poor response by the public in replying to the committee's circular, which was sent out some time ago.
