ATHLETIC HAVE AN EASY WIN

J WANDERERS SENIORS TROUNCED i | One of the hardest and fastest j games of the season was witnessed | on the Levin Domain, when the eagerly-awaited clash between , Wanderers and Athletic took place. 'Both teams were correctly dressed : with numbered jerseys and were ■ reminiscent of pre-war days. Ath- > letic were far superior to Wanderers in all types of play and with a : pack which was much heavier, | their rearguard received the ball ! after practically every scrum. The .Athletic backs showed more initia- , tive than their opponents, and the final score of 31 to nil was largely the result of the splendid efforts oi the Athletic backime. The teams ias they took the field were as follows: — 4 Wanderers: Heremaia, Seymour, Broughton, Hudson, Edmondson, P. and L. Winiata, Wehipeihana, Price, Plobson, Meads, Milroy, Kuiti, Morgan and Nepia. \ Athletic: Skilton, Stevens, Hudson, Batten, Galloway, Henson, Blenkhorn, Morris, Carkeek, Corbishley, W. and P. O'Donnell, Denton, Bartholomew and Fletcher. The First Half Wanderers kicked off into a strong sun and quickly took advan- j tage by picking up the ball and j passing out to their wing, Seymour, j who nearly scored in the corner. j The ball went into touch and from ; 'the throw-in Wanderers were; awarded a penalty. Heremaia took the kick, but the ball went a little wide and was forced. Some j extremely hard play was being experienced and Carkeek snapped up the ball and raced for the line, but was dragged down when a few feet away. This dash proved unnecessary, for the players were called back to the twenty-five, where an infringement had occured. From the set scrum the ball went to Seymour, who raced for the line but he, too, was dragged down by Galloway. A ruck developed and then Galloway, who had beaten his man, passed out to Stevens and raced over in the corner. Galloway 's kick fell short. Athletic 3, Wanderers nil. Athletic again forced the pace and with a pretty passing movement. they took the leather back to the black twentyfive. Following a set scrum, Blenkhorn passed on to Henson, who failed to hold, and the ball was kicked through by Morgan, closely . foliowed by Edmondson, who was, however, penalised for off-side. W. O'Donnell's kick went up the line and after some hard play Athletic once more took play deep into Wmderers' territory and nearly scored. Play continued on Waiiti ireri' line for about five minutes until ifc was finally forced. Heremaia kicked off and the ball finaliy found its way into touch spproximately tv;o yards from Athletic's line. From the line-out an infringement occurred and as Henson was standing off-side Wanderers were awarded a penalty. Seymour "s kick failcd. From a set scrum Blenkhorn reeeivcd and dummied nicely to break through with the forwards in support, but he was collared by Heremaia on the twenty-five. Two penalty kicks were given to Wanderers in quick succession, but the game was always forced back to the Wanderers line. On one of these oceasions Hudson snapped up the ball and was very unlucky not to sccre. A scrum was set and as the pa:.ks screwed, Broughton was. left standing off-side and Galloway mede no mistake with the kick. Athletic 6, Wanderers nil. y Athletic continued to force the pace and a few minutes later tlie packs were again set down. Blenkhorn snapped up the ball, cut round the side of the scrum and scored between the posts. W. O'Donnell added the tit-bits as the whistle for half time blew. Athletic 11, Wanderers nil. The Second Half Athletic kicked off and the ball was returned to Galloway, who marked it. His kick went well up field. After some further hara play,. Athletic were awarded a penalty and Galloway again converted to bring Athletic's points to 14. Galloway received the ball from a set scrum and tried to push through before passing on to Stevens, who dived for the corner- but was fcrced into touch. Wanderers now forced the pace and took the ball up the length of the field to Athletic's line, where there was a touchdown. Play went straight back to Wanderers' line and was accordingly forced. Carkeek and Galloway were hurt and during the lapse in play while they received attention from the St. John men the Long Arm of the Law intervened and cleared all spectators off the grass. Athletic forwards were making the pace and W. O'Donnell made an opening and passed on to Galloway who scored. The umpires signalled success and this brought the score to Athletic 19, Wanderers nil. Sopn after Carkeek broke clear of a ruck, picked up the ball and dived over. W. O'Donnell's kick failed to leave Athletic 22 points up. Wanderers kicked off, the ball going straight to Carkeek. He immediately threw it to Galloway, who broke clear and made a good 40 yards dash before passing to

Batten, who knocked on, A scrum was set down and the ball came out to Stevens, who was dragged down short of the line. The Athletic forwards were again doing good work and W. O'Donnell gathered in the leather and was helped in scoring by his opponent, who dragged him down. Carkeek's kickj failed, making the score Athletic 25. Wanderers 0. From the kick off the ball was again taken back to the' line where V/. O'Donnell again ; 'snapped it.up and scored. • The kiclv went wide. The Athletic forwards' were now having matters their own way and a rush led by Corbishley saw this player raee through the opposing team and score close to the poscs. Skiiton's kick went to the side, leaving the score at Athletic 31, Wanderers nil. Mr. J. A. Zuppicich carried the whistle. - i Players Ordered Off j During the game the referee ordered two players, one Athletic and one Wanderers, to the sideline for fighting. ... j
