FALSE PROSPERITY
"DI SILLU SIONED . ' '
Sir Mr. J. Thorn, M.P.? by his mswer to a question at his meeting ,n Levin, showed how false was the .dea that workers wer.e better. ofi aow than ever they were. He agreed shat the New Zealand £ to-day was only worth 10/- compared with 1936. Look at the position, say, of a tradesman, who in 193'6 was receiv-( [ng l/8d an hour for a 44-hour week, a total wage of £3/12/8. Today he receives 3/- an hour for 40 hours, a total of £6, but with 2/6d m the £ deducted his pay enyelope only contains £5/5/-, and with the present value of the £ this is equivalent to £2/17/6: that is 14/8d less than in 1936. This does not take into account the possible income tax. If. people would think they would not be so easily gulled. — Yours. etc.,
