JET PROPELLED WING FIGHTER
LONDON, Alay 29. Britain lias developed tlie Iirst jetpropelled Flving VVing figliter in tlie world — a De Havilland Swallow avMc.1i has been flying on trial for the past three Aveelcs. Tliis Avas announced by Mr. A. "Woodburn, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply. The Swallow's wings are SAvept back .45 degrees and its single fin rudder is attached to the exliaust cone of a Goblin 2Mark II jet. engine. Because of the unknown flying eharacteristics of the moth shaped machine, it has been tested with fixed slots. Nothing like the maximum speed has been attempted, but' it is expected that tlie De Havilland Ghost jet engine, | Avhich develops about 5000 lb. static ! tlirust, will eventually supersede the loAver povvered Goblin Swallow. It may tlien reach over 675 miles an hour — 70 above the existing Avo'rld reeord lield by the Gloster Meteor JMark IV jet ligliter. Mr. Woodburn said that the Sivallow would lead to a great future for aviation development. He expressed the opinion that in less tlian- tAVO years Britain would lead the world in a\-ia-tion.
