100th Anniversary
The hundredm anniversary was recorded last week of the arrival of the pioneer * explorers, Thomas Brunner, F.R.G.S., and Charles Heaphy, V.C., on the bank of the River Mawhera, which they called • he Grey River in honour of Si' George Grey, then Governor of New Zealand. The explorauon ' of the West Coast of the South Island, including the area now knowii as Westland, was commenced by Brunner and Heaphy because of the demand for land by settlers in Nelson after settlement of that j province early in 1841. Their purI pose was "to report on its resources and potentialities as a field for further settlement." Twenty years passed before the town of Greymouth was laid out on the banks of the Grey River. This was done when gold seekers came from many lands in search of. a fortune in 1866, just 20 years. after Brunner and Heaphy crossed the Mawhera River in a Maori canoe. The jourriey of the two explorers was the most epic one in the history of the province.
