Other mstructive and interesting pictures in the use of land in relation to soil conservation and the prevention of erosion were included in the variea programme. Cr. Aitchison an'd other councillors stated that it was a pity it was not possible to have the film screened in the evening, as it was a great difficulty for members of the farming community to see the film in the afteriioon. Cr. Lind agreed with the councillors, but pointed out that the films were supplied by the Sofis Conservation Councii to the Manawatu Catchment Board for a period of three weeks, and in that time it had to be screened over the whole of the board's district, which meant that it was necessary to have two showings daily. Cr. Lind stated that Shannon had to fit in with the itinerary. The film was being shown in the Opiki School on Thursday evening. Mr. D. J. McNichol, of Dannevirke, wrote advising the councii that a proposal to form a company for the purpose of providing a magnetic unit service embracing roads and streets not covered by the Main Highways Board units was bping considered by a number of Dannevirke businessmen. The service covered roads collecting by magnetic infiuence, nails and other metal objects which caused damage to motor tyres. The letter pointed out that the average pick-up by the Main Highways Board unit was 94 lbs. of nails per mile. The cost of the service would be about five shillings a mile. The councii was asked for its reactions to the project. After some discussion it was decided to write suggesting that if the plant was in the vicinity it would be possible to go over certain of the Shannon streets not covered by the Main Highways Board unt. The town clerk advised that there were about eight miles of streets not covered by the unit at present operating. It was suggested that the small cost of having the streets swept once yearly would benefit local motorists. A circular was reeeived from the Main Highways Board concerning a poster illustrating the school patrol system for display during the forthcoming period of driving 'licensing. The circular pointed out that drivers licensed in the country districts should be made familiar with the system, as they were likely to encounter it when they visited the towns. The town clerk advised that up to'date a total of 46 dogs had been registered at 2s 6d and 34 at 10s, making a total of 80, as against 70 last year. All returns were not yet i to hand. i Cr. Roach reported on the satisj factory condition of the domain, 'although on the Stout Street side 1 the hedge was overhanging the ! footpath. It was agreed that the whole of the hedge around the 1 domain should be cut, it being left in the town clerk's hands to obtain labour. Accounts amounting to £67 2s 4d were passed for payment.
