MINERS AND COAL SHORTAGE

WESTPORT, May 28. The coal miners at Denuiston have agreed to worlc on the King's Birthdav, Juue 3, and also on 1 ' back ' ' Saturdays beeause of the severe coa,l shortage in the Hominion. A request to tliis effect was made by the Coutroiler of Miues, Mr. C. H. Benuey, and is understood to have been supported by the Miners' National (Jouncil. Millerton miners have decided not to worlc on the King's Birthday or on "back" Saturdays in the meantime. Stockton men will consider the matter at a meeting tliis evening. Rayment for "back" Saturdays will be at' time aud a half and for the Iving 's Birthday at double tirne plus ordinary time. During the war years all Buller mines worked back on Saturday but the fiveday weelc has been observed for some time.
