RUGBY COACHES KEEN TO IMPROVE GAME

Explainiug the programme of the Cauterbury iiugby Coaehes' Association for the J94G season, the president (Mr. Eric E. Taylor) said recently that the main task was to keep the game uj) to the highest possible standard. To this end. all coaches must be fully acquainted with the rules, he said, and shortly eopies of all the latest amendments would be cireulated' to members. Monthly lectures were being planned, and, in addition, questionnaires would be drawn up, dealing with liner points in the rules, about which there might be some doubt. t One, for. instance, was: At the kiclc'oJi from half-way, - -the ball goes out ou the full. The opposing eaptain hds thiee alternatives. What are those alteruatives? "llipw many coaehes can answer that one cotrectly right off?" eontinued Mr Taylor. V "Notes on other points will be. welcotned from all coaches. Such questiomutires can be. made very interesting and instructive. They have been used in other' parts of the country with great success. Wo, as coaches, must imderstand the rules thoroughly and be ablo to apply them to the game; or we cannot possiblv assist the Rugby code as much as we would like to. "Coaches must. get togothev and help

one another. This is one of the aims of the present committee. Coaches must be proiicient. Much of the burden of Ihe game rests on tlieir shoulclers. Without them, it would slip back into a rough-and-tumble, that even the referees could not do much with. That is why we want the coaches to pull together, to fqrget the narrower aspeets of club rivalry, and lighten the burden of eacli and evevyone."
