SHIPBUILDING COSTS IN AUSTRALIA
Received Mondav, 8.35 p.m. MELBOURNE, May 27. The cost per ton of shipbuilding in Australia was lower than in Canada and America but mueh higher than in Eng--land, said Alr. R. S. Jackson, general secretary of the Shipwrights and vSlup C'onstruetors ' Federation, in evidenee, v hen the liearing of a claim for a general 40 hour week in the Australian industrv was resumed. Figures purporting to show that this was not so, hadbeen eomputed on a wrong basis. Shipbuilding costs in Australia would be redueed considerably if employers intfc'Otinced systems used on the Clyde, at Belfast and other British shipbuilding ocntres. Whyalla, South Australia, was the most effieient shipbuilding centre in Australia as the costs were lower there But mueh red tape and many supply bottlenecks could be eliminat-ed. Shipwrights were very restless about the 40hour week legislation. Though they had worked up to seventy hours weekly during the war, there had been no major industrial troubles. , '
