LETTERS TO THE EDTOR
gReetings unto the house of huia Sir —Now it cahie to pass that the tribes which were at war one with another, laid aside their weapons and bethought them once more of the flesh-pots, the taverns and divers gladsome occasions wherein the hearts of men rejoice. And the Elders of the Tribe, of Huia held counciramong themselves,'and the Chief Elder spoke, saying;: "Let us prepare a feast of rejoicing at the return of our young warriors; yea, let us give unto them the works, for the time is now at hand when the faithful may eat, drink and be merry. While the na.tions raged, each man was required to yield, unto the priests, coupons for nis meat and his butter, his wine and his oil, yea, even for his raiment, lest men see his nakedness and he become a scandal and a byword amongst the Gentiles. But. now the sword is sheathed, and the chariots of war have reverted unto milk vans and refuse wagoris; now the Tribe of the Yanks, which devoured all before it, hath departed unto its own land, and the faithful no longer need tighten their belts, nor gnash their teeth, nor rend their garments. Verily, I say unto you, we have had it! Therefore, let us hire unto the wine merchants, and purchase many measures of fine liquor; let us search in the bazaars for choice viands and rich vessels, and trappings of fine silk, that the feast may be remembered by men for generations. Yea; let it be that which is called a woop-cacker amongst the Gentiles ! And the Elders answered with one voice, crying: "Verily, brother, thou hast slobbered a bibful! Let us get cracking, ere the • cock croweth again!" And it was so. And they commanded the scribe of the Tribe of Huia that he convey the tidings unto the faithful, and bid them each to leave his ox and his ass, his wife and his child, and hasten unto the feast at the 20th hour on the first day of June, at the Hall of the Blind Men, in the street of Dixon, nigh unto the Bazaar of the Grey Chariots, and let each man bring with him six shekels of silver as an offering unto the priests of the temple. And he that bringeth a guest, from him shall the priests demand a further offering of six pieces of silver, that the Law 'may be fulfilled, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. Amen, amen. I say unto you. Let all men heed the commands of the . Elders. Yours etc., ALI BEN MILES Scribe unto the Tribe of Huia, and Secretary of the Huia Hockey Club. W ellington, May 20.
