WAVERLEY MEETING
AWAPUNI STABLE WINS DOUBLE Heavy rain was falling oa Saturday mornmg wlien eariy patrons of the waverley Racing Giub arrived at the course for the autumn meetings and in spite of tlie faet that the weather cieared, save for several showers, conditions were far from pleasant. Entrance gateways in the motor parking area quickly becanie quagiuires, and Llie" limited enclosure area was soon trampled into niud. Tlie track was heavy after much rain during the night; in faet, Taranaki had expcrienced something in the nature of a eloud-burst, and under the circumstances the attendance was satisfactory. The totalisator handled £21,083, conipared with £23,154 on the corresponding day in 1942, the last time the club had lield an autumn meeting. After the Bcsley Memorial, W. S. Bagbv rider of Second Seal, was iined £5 for cribbiug barrier positions. He drew No. 9 in a lield of eleven but tlicre were onlv two on the inside of him wlieu tlie tupes went up. A. M. Wright 's Awapuni stable provided Llie winuers of both jumping events, Tid-Apa scoring a comfortable win in Ihe Westliolm Hurdlcs, but Gay Kouen had to give of liis best to beat Master Francis in the Waverley Stecplechase, iu wliich his stableinate, .('oionel Bogey, was the eleet of backers but coukl get no closer than third. Blaclc -Pluto had a runawav win in the Bosley Memorial, winuing by four liMigths from Silver Pal, who just as easily beat Kecn l'iav, with the favourite, Seeoiul Seal, in fourth place after inaking tlie early pace. All three piacegetters were at gcnerous prices. The Hastiiigs-trained Indian Sport won llie open sprint, the Wairoa Handieap, n little more comfortably than tlie sliort ueck niargiu might appear to suggest, but tlie topweiglit, Alderman, iievp.rtliele.ss rau a good race, and Autoaeore linished 011 for third placc. The ten-fuiTong Ngutuwera Hack I'up, for appreiitice riders, proi'ided a eomplele upset, Silver Weddiug, from .1. G. Parrell's .Stratford stable, clearing out over the last half-inile to returu double ligures. Patta Fc, who was second, paid a good place pricc, and backers of Dualin, wlio was third, also secured a double-ligure return. The I'avonrite, Hunting Parlc, beat oniv 0110 horse liome. Ratene, who won the Symes Memorial Maiden, paid a dividend just short of double ligures, and good priees were obtained by backers of Ever Aussie and Dutch Orator, who filled the minor places. Peter Theio, who was the favourite, finished seventh. Carthage, who has frequently disappoinled, made amends by winuing the Kohi Highweight at good odds from a higger outsidor in Midflame. He is Iraia orl by W. .T. MeDowell, who also provided the winncr of the concludiug event in the cousisteiit Theocritus. The latler was at a surprisingly goud price, the favourite being First Footing, who was uever dangerous. Details: — WESTHOLM HURDLES HANDICAP; £190; 11 miles. 2-2 TID-APA, 9.3 (T. J.
