OTAKI RACES
ANOTIIER SUCCESSFl'L MEETING — After heavy rain during the i week the weather on " Saturday i morning was ideal for the races held by the Otaki Maori Racing Club, and in consequence there was j a splendid attendance, being far in j excess of many meetings held on: the course, The appointments, j thanks to Mr. Nepia Winiata andj his assistants, were well carried 1 out. Unfortunately, during the- day j there were heavy showers of rain,? and in consequence the track and; lawns were badly cut up. ' j Locally-trained horses were suc- • cessful in several of the events. j Penwilt ran a good race in the ' steeples to give J. C. Houlihan a , second; Sir Boswell, trained* by D. J. Burgess, annexed the Puke- : karaka Hack Handicap in good j style; Silver Rod, trained by Mr. A. W. Quinlivan, was first past the post in the main event of the day, but on account of an enquiry the honours went to the second horse, it being stated that Silver Rod bore out; Miss Deieware, trained by. Mr. H. W. Hakaraia, finished fifth; Master Day, trained by W. McEwan and ridden by W. Connor, won the last race, with Sailor Bay, trained by Pat Williams, filling third place. Among ' the suecessful jockeys were: — Broughton two firsts, one third; Ireland two firsts; Pearce and Mackie each a first and a second; Ford two sec.onds and a third; Bowry and Connor a first each; Powell, Waddell and Cavany a second each; Bowness and Messervy a second and a third each; Beale, Garth and Tattersall a third each. W. J. Bromby was the most suecessful trainer, having two winners.
