The first progress return of the ! employment survey in this district; which is at present being carried ; o.ut by the National Employment Service is now made available by the local District Employment OfRcer, Mr. L. W. Cozens. The completed surveys, numbering ten, cover the industries— grain milling, biscuit making, sugar, ' confectionery, chocolate and cocoa manufacture, tobacco manufacture, paper and pulp manufacture, tanneries, woollen mills, other textile production, footwear manufacture, and i pottery and glass. The labour employed, male and ; female, and the vacancies in these industries is shown hereunder-: — Total number of employees; Males, 111 (3); females, 121 (46). Total niunbgr o.f vacancies: Males, 6; females, 59. The figures in parenthesiS: indi'cate employees under the age of 21 years. ; Weekly publication of the results of survey of other industrial groups will be made. As each successive group is completed a better picture will be presented of the employment position in the whole district, "which jcomprises the area between Waii kanae and Dannevirke, both places jincluded, and on the other side as ifar as the Rangitikei River. The figures now supplied are forindustries of which there are very few in the area, and absorb only a small proportion of the total labour force. The early indication is a definite shortage of female labour, con.tributing factors to this shortage .being the revocation of the Man- ; power Regulations, which enabled directed personnel to resume Iheir chosen occupations, and also the great number of marriages contfacted with ex-servicemen.
