EXTRA SUGAR FOR BRITISH HOUSEWIVES

ISOXDON, May 15. British housewives will Ixe allowed an extra pound of sugar for jammaking during the four vveeks beginning on .June 23, and an extra alloeation of sugar will also be given to the makers of ice cream and soft drinks. lce cream manufacturers are to receive the same allocation as they received before the cuts were made last autumn, and the makers of soft drinks will receive quantities which will increase their snjiplies from one-fifth to two-lifths of tlie prewar sugar con1 sumption. | It is also considered likely that the promise of extra clothing coupons made in February by tlie President of tlie 'Board of Trade (Hir Stafford Cripps) will lie fulfilled. The present allowance is 42 coupons per vear, and it is expeetcd that this will be increased to 52 per year when the new clothing ration books are issued on Neptember 1. Tliis is largely due to the encouraging rate at which workers are being reabsorbed in the textile industries. Oflicial Jigures show that recruits in these industries are increasing by 1(1,001) each month. Another c.oncession just announced gives shoppers the right to change their butcher and grocer every eight weeks. Pre viously ' they could change only once a y^ar when tlie new ration books were issued.
