FILMING RACES IN AMERICA
Moving pictures of every raco are being liiade in America. And therc are uther developments which will enal)le stewards and ollier oflicials to vl'ew the filni (ivc minutes after eacli race is run, states Ihe Melbourne Sportiug Globe. Inslallation of canieras to help judges to place the horses correctly is only the lirst of tlie uses to which thcsc mai'liines will be applied on racecourses. For years the photo-hnish nietliod has been very succosst'ul on American tracks. So successful, indeed, that clubs are not content with that progress. I.'hey seek to extend the system by having each race pliotographed in its entirety. This is actually being done at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita tracks. The procedure of recording the entire race on celluloid is as follows: — Six cameras. located in towers at various points on the course, take ti series of head-on views, which, when put together, give the complete iilm record of the race. The value of sucli lilms has led to tlie California Horse Racing Board deciding that all races must l)e fully photographed. Another Methocl As might be expected, experiments are being niade to iiuprove on the Telefilm system. The lat'est is a single camera -which lilms the wliole race. The iilm is ready for tlie stewards less than Jive minutes after the race has been run. This camera travels arouiul the inside rail 011 an electrically-driven motor, which, iii turu, is mounted on a track not unlike that used for tin-hare racing. The camera is 150 feet ahead of the horses and takes the whoie race head on. An operator in a control tower regulates the speed of the camera-carriage. and after the iinish shunts it to a side track. There the fibn is developed and dried. Owners and designers of the Pace-O-Graph (as it is known) are Everett Ilaynes, former champion jockev, whc was associated with the French horse
Epinard in his match races in America, and Gary Hchwartz, a teclinical expert with an English filin studio.
